The Problems Begin.. #1

There always has to be problems, otherwise there would be nothing to learn from. And this time they started early. We plan on putting a custom gun into UDK, so outside of college I have been modelling a weapon. One of the days i went into college Ishy mentioned that he has been looking into how to do it and wanted to do a demo before hand. I modelled a very basic 'blocky' magnum and followed the steps it said, this included making a joint and binding the joint and mesh together, then animating the joint using the keyframes. After this was done it had to be exported as a FBX and set the animation keyframes used. and also smooth the mesh, this was done and it was exported although we forgot to triangulate the model it came into UDK fine, there was other options westill had to do including seleting the joing AnimSet so the mesh. We planned on using a gun which was already in UDK as our fire mode e.g. making a new gun shoot like an exsisting one, this required some scripting, what had to be done was we had to get the file of the weapon we wanted and duplicate the file and rename it to our weapon, this had to be done for 3 seperate setions of the gun. What had to be done was we had to open up the script in notepad and replace the current weapons name with out own, so in UDK we right lciked and copied full name to clickboard and pasted it in the currect places, this had to be done a few times in each file and the ammo was also changes as the demo was a magnum we made it 8 shots per magazine. After this was done we then opened UDk, unfortunetly it wouldnt work, Somewhere along the way we got something wrong so UDK wouldnt open, we checked over it all an couldnt find the problem in the model or scripting, we then had to delete our scripts to get UDK to work but this means our gun wouldnt either. At this point the lesson was over and we had to go home. At home I done the process following the same tutorial using the current gun that was in process of modeling, it worked again although it wasnt trangluated. At one point in the process you have to rename a sequence of 2 of the animation models currectly, I beleive this is where me and Ishy typed our own name making it unreadable by UDk as the tutorial explained it wouldnt have worked. The script was done and before I opened UDk I called Ishy to share the excitment or dissapointment of if it worked it not, i currently had 2 verisons of UDK on my computer. the first one I opened was the one without the scripting which I didnt know so it worked fine but didnt ask to rebuild scripts like it was supose to. And the gun wasnt their, after we figured out the issue we opened up the correct UDK and rebuilt the scripts and it worked! With Ishy walking me through I placed a weapon holder and put the gun onto it, but for some reason it wasnt visible. I went into the game and walked over the gun holder and picked up the gun but it wasnt visible, i wasnt holding anything, but the ammo amount was 8 like it was set it fired and has the shcokrifle (demo gun we used) image at the bottom right, once agsin with Ishys help I went through and made an A.I bot and game him my weapon, spawned in the map went up to the bot, he was holding the shockrifle, this means their is a problem with the model of the gun. I checked the scripts and it was fine so i knew it was the model, after I remembered i didnt triangulate it and this might be the problem, it hasnt been addressed since but a future update will come showing what was the problem and the outcome.
